Professional Experience

Prior to joining the firm, Ben was enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard for ten years and deployed to Iraq in 2004.  While in law school, Ben interned with the Farmer's Legal Action Group and the United States Department of Agriculture in St. Paul, Minnesota.

While practicing as an Associate Attorney at Arndt, Buswell, & Thorn, S.C., Ben has had the opportunity to work with all of the many different types of clients a general practice attorney represents.  Ben has successfully represented a local dairy farmer in a contract dispute obtaining a $100,000.00 settlement.  In that case Ben was able to settle the matter while diligently preparing for trial and shortly after multiple days of deposition.  Ben also has successfully represented an individual injured when hit by a drunk driver obtaining a $100,00.00 settlement; an individual poisoned with carbon monoxide obtaining a $60,000.00 settlement; and an employee injured while at work obtaining a $60,000.00 settlement.

Ben was the lead attorney of a personal injury action that obtained a jury award of $400,00.00 after a three day trial.  In that case, Ben and his co-attorneys were successful in convincing a 12 person jury to award the injured plaintiff the entire amount of medical bills and pain and suffering requested.

Additionally, Ben has helped hundreds  of clients though real estate transaction from smaller residential/vacant lot purchases to large farm acquisitions.  Ben has had the pleasure of advising many small business owners on the form of business that is best suited for each particular small business, through the planning necessary to be successful while growing and/or transferring the business to family and/or employees and by reviewing and drafting the documents they use every day and/or during important changes in the company.  Ben has helped multiple, local small business owners through the process buying the business and the real estate associated with the business.  Ben really enjoys working with his small business clients, getting to learn how the many different types of business' operate including the systems and products used based in the industry of the business

Ben is involved in all aspects of representing the municipalities represented by the firm and specifically is the prosecutor for each of the municipalities.  Ben has successfully prosecuted multiple OWI 1st citations.  At the same time, Ben represents clients going through the stressful criminal procedure.

Finally, Ben has been heavily involved in zoning issues during his time with the firm.  Ben has represented parties on all sides of the frac sand mining boom in Western Wisconsin.  Ben was successful in obtaining conditional use permits for new mines being built in multiple different municipalities.  Ben has been involved in working out development agreements for mines in un-zoned municipalities as well. Ben has represented land owners through the process of selling and leasing their property to the mining companies.  Ben enjoys working with the local municipal boards and communities to help everybody understand the legal framework around zoning decisions and the levels of compromise available to reach a resolution that all parties involved find suitable.

Personal Information

Ben lives in Saint Joseph with his wife, Tracy, and his three children, Isabella, Roman and Everly. Ben was raised on his family's pig farm in western Minnesota.  Ben enjoys playing and watching all sports from football and basketball to hunting and fishing.
